Megan Flood has deep roots in Vermont - and the financial services industry. Her parents, Ric and Teena Flood, started Flood Financial Services the year before she was born. She’s been immersed in the family business for as long as she can remember.

“I always knew that I would integrate into the practice but never felt like I had any right to do it just because I was their daughter,” said Flood. “I wanted to get some industry experience of my own from other peoples’ perspective.”

After earning her Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Babson College, Megan lived in Boston and New York and traveled around the country, working in institutional investment sales and learning about the industry. She began her career in Finance at John Hancock, helping financial advisors understand how to effectively use variable annuities, fixed annuities, retirement plans, and 529 college savings plans. She then joined BNY Mellon, where she shifted her focus to mutual funds and alternative investments, working with institutions throughout the East Coast.

In 2017, after 12 years of constant travel and living in downtown Boston, and surviving two rounds of advanced melanoma - “I’m proud to say I kicked cancer’s butt,” - Megan decided it was time to bring her hard-earned expertise and knowledge back to Vermont and join Flood Financial Services, where she now works as part of the advisory team. She lives in South Burlington and really appreciates the access to outdoor activities, healthy foods, fresh air and better work-life balance that Vermont offers.

For Megan, the most satisfying part of her job is helping ease her clients’ fears about the unknowns of financial planning. “So often, people that I speak with are afraid - they’re afraid of investing, they’re afraid of the markets, they’re afraid of what they don’t know. And so, within a couple of meetings, I can really help ease their fears, help them better understand their finances, and have more confidence in where they’re going in the future.”

Megan particularly enjoys working with professionals in their 30s and 40s who are balancing careers and family lives while saving for the future, and need some help reaching their goals. She believes that women, and women business owners, are a population that has been underserved by financial advisors in the past, and she’s working to change that. “I think I can relate to them in a different way than your average financial advisor, and I really like watching some of these businesses start small and begin to grow, and helping the individual, the business, and its employees, through that life cycle. This is hands down the most fulfilling work I've ever done.”

For Megan, relationships really do matter.

“My past career was a little bit more sales or transactional focused, whereas this is very much about the relationship, and I just find it so incredibly fulfilling to be able to help people through the best and the worst times in their life, whether it's marriages or divorces, kids and grandkids,  the loss of a parent or a spouse… we have the opportunity to really guide them through some difficult and some happy times.”

Megan is committed to going above and beyond to help her clients because she knows the services she provides can have a significant impact on their lives. Plus, she tells us, it’s just nice to help people successfully work toward their goals, whether that’s a comfortable retirement, a new boat, or a camp on Lake Champlain.

And when life presents more difficult challenges, Megan is there to help clients navigate the paperwork - and act as a shoulder to cry on, if needed. “I often joke I’m as much a therapist as I am a financial advisor. Money is very emotional to people. Something unique I bring to the table is a more empathetic approach.”

Megan and the rest of the team at Flood Financial Services work every day to embody the values of honesty, integrity and trust. “It's doing the right thing by your client, even if it's at a sacrifice for ourselves. It's a small town. It's a small community. Word of mouth and referrals have been an amazing source of growth for us and we just truly believe if you do the right thing for people, it will come back to you. And I think that's palpable when you walk in the door.”
